Career in Pharmacy

The profession of Pharmacy has transformed into a hub for the “Global Healthcare” and evolved out as a multidisciplinary, multifaceted curriculum.   • Production and Manufacturing: Indian pharmaceutical industry has achieved Global recognition as a low cost producer and supplier of bulk drugs and formulations with exports of over Rs. 6631 crores. Anticipating the huge demand, the Government has taken special steps to boost this unique discipline. Changes in the pharmaceutical policy by the Government of India with regards to foreign investment, licensing etc directed towards promoting accelerated growth of pharmaceutical industry has brought the Indian pharmaceutical industry in the global limelight. With all these measures, the pharmaceutical industry is poised for a phenomenal expansion both in domestic as well as international markets leading to an exponential rise in demand of pharmacy professionals. Top pharmaceutical giants like Ranbaxy, Glaxo, Wochhardt, Dabur, Pfizer, Alembic, Cadila, Cipla etc offer promising career to pharmacy graduates.
     
  • Opportunities Abroad: According to a recent survey US has 5500 unfilled pharmacist vacancies and 2800 unfilled hospital pharmacist positions. The most severe shortages are in Arkansas, California and Maine. Toronto, Canada is also short more than 2000 pharmacist. Pharmaceutical innovations, newer drug products and increasing health awareness is resulting in more and more demand for pharmacy professionals. The pharmacy graduates are being offered salaries of $ 75,000 - $ 80,000 pa.
     
  • Hospital Pharmacy: The Indian healthcare sector is growing at a staggering rate of 17% annually and is all set to be Rs. 1862 billion sector by 2005-06 from current Rs. 1030 billion. All this translates into setting up of large sophisticated hospitals providing excellent job opportunities for pharmacy graduates.
     
  • Community Pharmacy: According to a recent survey, the Indian healthcare spending will double over the next few years. Health insurance sector is opening up in India and is estimated to be a Rs. 390 billion business. Top National and Multinational health insurance companies have geared up to cater to this huge segment and will offer top jobs to pharmacy graduates. Diagnostic centers, Primary hospitals, NGO’s involved in National campaigns like Pulse Polio, AIDS control, TB eradication etc are just few areas where pharmacy graduates have an important role to play.
